why did they stick coins in the straw? Are they making a wish?

@csong: Yes, I believe this is a good luck type of thing. I'm tall enough I could reach up and push the coin into the straw. The typical Japanese person is too short. People also toss coins up on the ropes of the shimenawa. That's much harder than it sounds at least for me. The coins keep wanting to slide off. I finally got one to stay.
