csong from tempe, United Stateswhy did they stick coins in the straw? Are they making a wish? 18 Aug 2007 4:28pm @csong: Yes, I believe this is a good luck type of thing. I'm tall enough I could reach up and push the coin into the straw. The typical Japanese person is too short. People also toss coins up on the ropes of the shimenawa. That's much harder than it sounds at least for me. The coins keep wanting to slide off. I finally got one to stay. kairospix from Singapore, Singaporewhat an interesting thing to do 18 Aug 2007 4:40pm Andrew Gould from Sydney, AustraliaGood contrast between the people and the architecture here. Interesting cultural point to this, too. 22 Aug 2007 6:45am |
