Behold the White EgretPosted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 22 September 2007 in Architecture. You may have seen the other three national treasure castles on this site: Hikone Jo, Inuyama Jo, and Matsumoto Jo. They are all nice but the best has been saved for last, Himeji Jo. Definitley the best castle in Japan, it is among the world's great castles. If you see no other castle in Japan, see this one! About the nickname, the Japanese call it Shirasagi Jo. I've read the English translation as "White Egret" or "White Heron". When I asked some Japanese folks about the two meanings, I have been told both depending on the speaker. So, take your pick.
