Pottery Firing 1

Posted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 19 January 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture.

This series of images shows the firing of pottery as it has been done traditionally and as it is still being done today. This pottery is made by members of the Santa Clara Pueblo. Note the red color of the pots.

why is it red?

@Csong: The clay used yields this nice red color. (Also, the red pots may be a buff color below the surface with a red "slip" of red clay being painted on. A carved pot with the red and buff colors both showing can be especially striking.) I think the firing process may intensify the color a bit. In any case, the red color of the finished pots is quite beautiful.
