Hanging ValleyPosted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 23 June 2008 in Landscape & Rural. Note the dark streak of "desert varnish" below the valley. This is caused by microbes eating the iron and copper that has leached out of the rock when water has been present. This phenomenon is fairly common in the southwestern deserts. Part of The Great American West series.
