Grays River Covered BridgePosted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 10 December 2008 in Architecture and Portfolio. Built in 1905, this is the only covered bridge still in use by the public in Washington State, USA. I discovered it while driving the roads less traveled, by me anyway, in Southwestern Washington.

Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomWe don't have covered bridges in the UK; I imagine this one is only for light traffic....? Good BW image of this shady area. 10 Dec 2008 5:06am @Observing: I'm not sure of the load limit on this bridge. However, I've begun researching covered bridges in Oregon. Some of those were designed to carry fully loaded log trucks. One covered bridge carried fully loaded logging trains in its heyday. I'm going to start mapping out where these things are located. More to come. . . . . Daniel from Kenmare, United Stateswow. it must be peaceful, but you make it look evil! 10 Dec 2008 5:16am Daryl from Amagasaki, JapanI like this heavily-shaded look... nostalgic, and a bit mysterious. 10 Dec 2008 9:39am Monte Stevens from Fort Collins, United StatesIt's amazing what we find traveling on that road! Well done! 10 Dec 2008 1:02pm Ana Lúcia from Leiria, PortugalI love the look of B&W film, especially the grain. 10 Dec 2008 1:06pm Jeffster from Long Island, United StatesBeautiful, grainy b&w image. Shade in the front, and light in the back really pulls you into the photo. 10 Dec 2008 1:12pm Laurie from New Jersey, United StatesCovered bridges are so scarce. This is wonderful. 10 Dec 2008 1:14pm Michael Skorulski from Cigel, SlovakiaA beautiful bridge and a very romantic image, Steve. 10 Dec 2008 3:53pm Pradeep from Chennai, IndiaLove the composition here. The treatment also is nice; that combined with the bridge architecture gives it an antique feel :) 10 Dec 2008 4:36pm yiannis krikis from thessaloniki, GreeceI like the light at the background and the scenery at the front of the image 10 Dec 2008 5:40pm don from United StatesI like the framing of this interesting bridge. Excellent black and white work. 10 Dec 2008 5:40pm Shirin Moosavi from Tehran, IranCovered bridges remind me of the film "The Bridges of Madison County". 10 Dec 2008 6:11pm bluechameleon from Vancouver, CanadaThis image is so beautifully captured! I love the way the trees frame the bridge and the light through to the other end. Superb shot! 10 Dec 2008 9:07pm Pixim from Nice, FranceConstruction is perfect, of the photograph of course, but also surely of the bridge… this small window at the end of the bridge is magic, the repetition of the roofs, sheets then of tiles is charming Bravo ;) 10 Dec 2008 9:34pm MaryB from Staffordshire, United KingdomWhat a lovely bridge, really a beautiful shot Steve. 10 Dec 2008 9:43pm Marcah from Quincy, United StatesI love covered bridges but none in my area. Wonderful tones in b&w along with this composition make a great piece of work. Thank you for your visit. 10 Dec 2008 11:16pm akarui from Kagoshima, JapanI suppose that the exit is about the same size than the entrance and that at least a car can cross the bridge. May be even a truck as the roof is high. Nice BW picture. 11 Dec 2008 12:30am JJ from Jersey City, United StatesA beautiful bridge beautifully captured and processed, it all my time sin the states I havent seen a covered bridge yet, making a note to sort that out next year 11 Dec 2008 2:20am Monique from Koh Samui, ThailandCan't imagine why they would cover a bridge, but it's a great sight and I like the square in the background, it creates a great depth in the photo! 11 Dec 2008 3:37am @Monique: These old bridges were made of wood. It rains a lot here in the Pacific Northwest. The covers helped protect the bridge decks and supporting beams from the rain and the attendant deterioration. timothy from Tokyo, Japanbeautiful! works really well in b&w; i took a similar shot inside one, but the exterior view here is fabulous--great work 11 Dec 2008 4:14am One from Açores, PortugalVery beautiful image !
