I never would have figured that out -- fish ladder. What does it do? (Besides give a photographer inspiration because of the delightful patterns it plays in the water?)

@GJC: Where there are falls or other difficult passages for fish trying to get upstream to spawn, these ladders are installed to make the journey a bit easier for them. The fish we take a big interest in here in the Pacific Northwest is salmon.
