An intrepid hiker stands beside a huge root wad from a fallen tree. Douglas Fir, for example, have wide, shallow root systems that seem to leave them vulnerable to high winds at times.

Its really huge, good you've put someone in front of the tree so we can see how enormous it is. Great photo and I see all sorts of plants that already have found a nice spot to grow.
