Parvin Covered Bridge

Posted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 4 April 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Today begins a new series highlighting the covered bridges of Oregon. I read an article in my local newspaper describing some of them about twenty years ago and have wanted to photograph them ever since. Built in 1921, the Parvin Covered Bridge is a 75 foot (22.9 meter) Howe Truss type spanning Lost Creek in Lane County, Oregon, USA. It has a 10 ton (9.1 metric ton) load limit.

Although I find these bridges endlessly fascinating, some of you wont. Therefore, they will be presented in small doses. Besides, I have many more yet to see and capture.

A note about dates: Nearly all the bridges you see have replaced other bridges at the same spot that may have been constructed decades earlier.

I'm happy you're doing this series, Steve. I find covered bridges fascinating and captured a few when I was in Ohio but no one could tell me about their history. This shot is a great start to the series, can't wait to see and read about the rest.

They are fascinating structures. I also have this slated as a summer project - the covered bridges of central Pennsylvania. It is a shame that so many of them are disappearing. well done.

nice bw Steve, i like.

Still i wonder why domr bridges were covered. Does anyone know ?

4 Apr 2009 6:30pm

@DenisSm: The Pacific Northwest gets lots of rain. The bridges were made of wood and were covered to protect the beams from deterioration.

Though I've only seen a few covered bridges, this one seems taller than most. Your choice of black and white is ideal for showcasing these historical structures. I'm so glad that many of them are being kept up. Very nice capture.
