Mosby Creek Covered Bridge

Posted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 12 April 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Built in 1920, this is Lane County, Oregon's oldest covered bridge. The 90 foot (27.4 meter) bridge of the Howe truss type spans Mosby Creek in Lane County, Oregon, USA. It has an 8 ton (7.3 metric ton) load limit.

Part of the Covered Bridges of Oregon series.

It's an old bridge but beautifully preserved, I suppose that in Lane Country they are very proud of it.
Thanks for posting.

so many covered bridges, do you have explanation why they are covered ?

12 Apr 2009 6:51am

@zanfifotos: The Pacific Northwest gets lots of rain. The bridges were made of wood and were covered to protect the beams from deterioration.

Wonderful composition and superbly muted tones! Well done, Steve!

Good photo. Maybe I would've tryied to enhance the contrast in the middle zone, specially the water and the white paint, but I think it would be quite difficult. It's just and idea... although I'm not sure about it.

They are all very similar in fashion but each have their own unique identities

@P J W Miller: You are exactly right. In fact, I talk a bit more about the subtle differences to watch for in my post two days from now.

Hi Steve, great photo, love the bridge, I was wondering why they cover the bridge in like this, do you know? The water is so tranquil looking and it would be great to stand on the bridge and look over....

@Marie: The Pacific Northwest gets lots of rain. The bridges were made of wood and were covered to protect the beams from deterioration.

Another charming looking bridge. They all seem to be made in the Howe Truss design, I assume this is a trusted method..?

12 Apr 2009 10:42pm

@observing: I found an article on truss design which says the Howe truss is a simple and strong design. That's probably why it caught on but it is considered a rare design. Along with simplicity comes the fact that if any portion of the truss fails, the whole structure collapses. Apparently though, forces could be calculated closely and if large enough timbers are used in construction, they don't fail.

We have several covered bridges nearby, unusual for the area. They were covered to keep ice and snow off the roadway. best...jerry

A meticulously built rectangular covered bridge in the middle of an untidy and wild forest. Creation of human beings versus creations of nature. I like it!
