Chitwood Covered Bridge 2Posted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 1 May 2009 in Architecture. This is the third bridge at this spot, the first being built in 1893, to provide access to the railroad station. The first two were uncovered. Chitwood was a booming logging community in the early 1900s. But in 1940, the old Southern Pacific Depot was removed. The signs on each end of the bridge are from the depot. This one shows the distance to Portland, 139.8 miles (225 kilometers) and San Francisco, 750.6 miles (1,208 kilometers). Note the flared sides which are typical for Lincoln County. Part of the Covered Bridges of Oregon series.

Interesting how the entire bridge is not covered. This has been a great series! 1 May 2009 3:37pm MysLykeMeeh from Toronto, Canadaat first it looks like a bus inside...but yah I agree , really nice! 1 May 2009 4:33pm Lou from Calumpit, PhilippinesVery nice shots of bridges. I wished I could shoot bridges too but there aren't too many wooden (and covered) ones here :( 1 May 2009 4:52pm jeff (aka dogilicious) from Millerstown, PA, United StatesThe flared sides are unique. I would assume it has something to do with the amount of rainfall. Nice capture. 1 May 2009 9:36pm Veronique from Sarrouilles, FranceNice to be able to see the two ends ! very good 1 May 2009 9:49pm |
