Drift Creek Covered BridgePosted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 9 June 2009 in Architecture. Even near the coast, one finds covered bridges. Built in 1914, this 66 foot (20.1 meter) bridge of the Howe truss type spans Bear Creek in Lincoln County, Oregon, USA. It was moved eight miles (12.9 kilometers) from its original site on Drift Creek and reassembled over a concrete bridge providing access to the Sweitz family property rather than being allowed to deteriorate further in its original location. It had become unsafe even for pedestrian traffic. This move was completed in 2000. The trusses are in place so it's still an authentic covered bridge. When I first arrived at this location, it was sunny and the light very contrasty. This being Oregon, I only had to wait a few minutes for it to cloud up and a rain shower began which evened out the light a bit. Part of the Covered Bridges of Oregon series.

I can almost feel the humidity and smell the trees. 9 Jun 2009 10:11pm jeff (aka dogilicious) from Millerstown, PA, United StatesGreat work. The shape of this is interesting. I guess with all the rainfall there was a geater need to protect the trusses thus the slight flare. 9 Jun 2009 10:26pm dj.tigersprout from New York City, United Statesa beautiful shot -- a handsome bridge indeed! 10 Jun 2009 3:18am |
