Wimer Covered BridgePosted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 16 June 2009 in Architecture. Built in 2008, this bridge replaces the original 42 foot (12.8 meter) span, built in 1929, that collapsed on July 6, 2003. That span had a 3 ton (2.7 metric ton) load limit. As I heard the story from a county maintenance worker while photographing the Lost Creek bridge, heavy farm machinery had been driven across the bridge as part of a Fourth of July celebration. Apparently, the load exceeded the aged trusses' limit. We've already talked about what happens if you break a truss: collapse. The new bridge has a 10 ton (9.1 metric ton) load limit. Part of the Covered Bridges of Oregon series.

I like the bright white against the strong greens and blues. 16 Jun 2009 1:45pm Terry H. from Azle Texas, United StatesLooks too modern and too white. Prefer the dark colored covered bridges. 16 Jun 2009 2:23pm Don from spokane, United StatesA fine looking bridge. I can imagine a bridge failing. We assume things like this have a limitless capacity which is not the case. A quality shot of this bridge. 16 Jun 2009 2:26pm Marie LC from Voiron, Francechaque jour un pont différent, c'est fou ce qu'il y en a dans ta région... et moi qui voulais en faire quand je suis allée au Québec et qui n'en ai pas croisé un seul là où j'étais !!! 16 Jun 2009 2:43pm @Marie LC: Apparently there is at least one covered bridge in France according to Wikipedia. It's the Pont de Rohan in Landerneau, Brittany. It crosses the Elorn River. This image looks like it's much different than these Oregon bridges. peter from new york, United Statesi wish we had some bridges like that around here! 16 Jun 2009 3:51pm hugo poon from hong kong, Hong KongEvery bridge you've photographed is showing individual character! This series is getting more amazing each day! 16 Jun 2009 4:16pm Ajay from Pune, IndiaSo this one can carry traffic heavier than pedestrian? Well, that would really be amazing to drive through these bridges. 16 Jun 2009 4:42pm Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, SpainBack from my holidays, I found this new bridge and enjoy the beauty and the old style of it.
