Tillamook Rock LighthousePosted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 18 June 2009 in Architecture. Much to my surprise, Tillamook Rock Lighthouse was visible this foggy morning while it had been shrouded in a fog bank the sunny afternoon before. The lighthouse is located 1.2 miles (1.9 kilometers) off Tillamook Head. The light went into service in 1881 after an arduous 525 day construction project that subjected the workers to violent storms. The completed lighthouse has a 62 foot (18.9 meter) tower which puts the light 133 feet (40.5 meters) above the sea. Known as Terrible Tilly, the lighthouse was subjected to violent storms that threw rocks through the light room windows. In 1934, the worst storm ever sent rocks into the light room destroying the Fresnel lens and flooding the tower. The keepers were able to rig an auxiliary light the next day so that the lighthouse was only dark for one night. In 1957, the light was turned off having been replaced by an automated whistle buoy. Part of the Oregon Coast series.

I like the inclusion of the on-shore weeds/reeds that form a foreground element and add depth to the shot. Well done. 18 Jun 2009 2:52pm Monique from Koh Samui, ThailandSuch a great story about Terrible Tilly, poor people that were living there with the rocks flying all around!
