Hogback Covered BridgePosted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 20 October 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio. Built in 1884, this 97 foot (29.6 meter) bridge of the Town Lattice truss type spans the North River in Madison County, Iowa, USA. It remains at its original site in a valley north of Winterset. The interesting name comes from a limestone ridge which forms the west end of the valley. It carries no vehicular traffic. Part of the Bridges of Madison County series.

Dulcie from Danville, CA, United StatesThe sweet deckled-edged frame is perfect for this wonderful old, uniquely-shaped bridge. A lovely shot !!! 20 Oct 2009 5:13am Sarito from Basingstoke, United KingdomLovely bridge... like how nicely covered and maintained 20 Oct 2009 8:03am MrsAmber from West Wickham, United KingdomSuch atmosphere generated in this shot! 20 Oct 2009 8:49am Veronique from Sarrouilles, Francethe misty day and the color of this bridge give a melancholic feeling 20 Oct 2009 9:27am k@ from Paris, FranceOkay I have a question now : did you fell in love with this reg-waggon-like unexpected bridge ? 20 Oct 2009 11:09am @k@: The area around these bridges is quite rural. This bridge is several miles from Winterset which is a very small town. For these reasons, I imagine that no one sleeps here on a regular basis if at all. These isolated bridges are now under video surveillance probably as a result of the arson that befell the Cedar covered bridge. Although I was only in Winterset a short time, I saw no homeless people as one would in a large city. My guess is that it is too small a place to support much of a homeless population. One would probably need to go to Des Moines, the Capital of Iowa and closest large city, to find a significant homeless population. The above remarks are based solely on my observations and speculation. I have no facts to back them up.
