AgavePosted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 28 October 2009 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio. An agave on the trail to Devil's Bridge near Sedona, AZ, USA. This plant is sending up a large flower stalk which is one of the last things it will ever do. After setting seed, these plants die. It will dry out and may stand for a few years before falling over. I read that some of these flower stalks can grow to 25 feet (7.6 meters) although I've only seen them a little over half that height. Other delightful plants awaited us on the trail to Devil's Bridge. Part of the Devil's Bridge series.

Monique from Koh Samui, ThailandThat's a really huge flower! Beautiful photo and I like the color toning you've used! 28 Oct 2009 5:48am k@ from Paris, FranceNever seen one before, thanks Steve. And love your tonality in that B&W, very timeless, reminds me of Edward Weston's work in... Mexico ! 28 Oct 2009 8:18am zOOm from Paris, FranceA wonderful sepia toning Steve, very nice presentation as well. 28 Oct 2009 8:39am MrsAmber from West Wickham, United KingdomI'll enjoy seeing the Devil's Bridge series. I love the dangerous beauty of this plant. 28 Oct 2009 11:11am Amanda from Jersey City, United StatesGreat composition and I love the tones. That's interesting that they die after reaching their most beautiful point. Thanks for the info! 28 Oct 2009 1:46pm bekkah from Pennsylvania, United Statesa wonderful capture, love the spiky-pattern that these leaves/stalk make :) 28 Oct 2009 2:43pm Don from spokane, United StatesAn interesting looking plant with a description to match. Fine monochrome shot of it with the detail I like in plant shots. Well done. 28 Oct 2009 2:51pm @B.Held: I do too. john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United StatesVery nice. Strong shot! 28 Oct 2009 8:09pm Viewfinder from Bradenton, FL, United StatesDramatic shot. This is well-balanced, good contrast, great choice to go BW. We've got one doing this in our front garden right now. A different variety, a different setting. But following the agave life-cycle. I'm a little sad that this is near the end of the line for that one plant. 28 Oct 2009 8:42pm Michael from Shell village, United KingdomFirst time I've seen this plant, it looks very strong. The image is gorgeous Steve. 28 Oct 2009 9:42pm Steven from Chicagoland, United StatesGreat framing and highlights. And I love the "busy-ness" of the large rosettes of leaves that fill the bottom. That budding stalk looks quite thick like it may be "one of those tall ones." :-) 28 Oct 2009 10:26pm Ajay from Pune, IndiaThat's something I'd have never come to known and see. World is full of surprises. Thanks for sharing, Steve. 29 Oct 2009 1:14am jeff (aka dogilicious) from Millerstown, PA, United StatesExcellent b/w. An interesting plant. Tequila anyone? 30 Oct 2009 1:31am |
