Whitney PocketsPosted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 6 August 2010 in Landscape & Rural. Joshua trees and red rocks mark this area where Gold Butte Road becomes gravel. It's paved to this point but don't think smooth Interstate highway; think potholed and broken pavement big city street that doesn't get fixed. Devil's Fire

@Florence: We aim to please. :-) @Phil David Alexander Morris: You're right! It's a type of Yucca. The Joshua tree name was given it by a group of Mormon settlers crossing the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century according to Wikipedia. @Bethany: I would guess not but can't remember. I usually don't in the desert, or high altitude, environment because it's easy to overdo it. @k@: It's 40.6° C (105° F) in Mesquite, NV today. That's hot! But, it was much cooler when I was there. It was probably in the 26-32° C range (80s F) when I was there. With the low humidity, temperatures up to about 32° C (90° F) are bearable. Above that, it's time go somewhere cool. |
