Joshua trees and red rocks mark this area where Gold Butte Road becomes gravel. It's paved to this point but don't think smooth Interstate highway; think potholed and broken pavement big city street that doesn't get fixed.

Does not sound like a good place to drive, but it is a heck-of-a place to take photos judging by this gem. Wonderful prickly textures. :-)

Phil David Alexander Morris from Saskatoon, Canada

I would have thought that tree was a cactus type plant.
the color inthis photo is phenomenal and such a beautiful
painters eye you seem to have to all your pictures.

6 Aug 2010 1:18pm

@Phil David Alexander Morris: You're right! It's a type of Yucca. The Joshua tree name was given it by a group of Mormon settlers crossing the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century according to Wikipedia.

Yes this is a great composition Steve - I think Joshua trees are just beautiful and, unfortunately, many seem to be in trouble these days with the climate doing weird things all over (don't get me started) but I do love this image. You have it so wonderfully done. May I take this home??

A fine shot of the joshua tree and its setting. I like how nature makes plants and earth blend together so well as shown in this shot. Nice one.

Amanda from Jersey City, United States

Well I guess the potholes force you to drive slow, and ultimately, enjoy the amazing scenery!

6 Aug 2010 4:02pm

Bethany from Michigan, United States

I like the contrast of the red rock against the sky. Did you use a polarizer for this?

6 Aug 2010 4:53pm

@Bethany: I would guess not but can't remember. I usually don't in the desert, or high altitude, environment because it's easy to overdo it.

Calusarus from St Sorlin en Valloire, France

Very nice shot of this tree.

k@ from Paris, France

I read your answer to Phil, i also thought of a cactus tree. Geez, how dry this landscape is, and how strong seems the sun. We can feel the heat ! Btw, how hot it is ? I'm afraid i won't be able to visit this beautiful set you share here, i can't stand high temperatures... Super tones !

6 Aug 2010 8:05pm

@k@: It's 40.6° C (105° F) in Mesquite, NV today. That's hot! But, it was much cooler when I was there. It was probably in the 26-32° C range (80s F) when I was there. With the low humidity, temperatures up to about 32° C (90° F) are bearable. Above that, it's time go somewhere cool.

Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, France

Lovely landscape, like this kind of vegetation, very strange and unusual. As K@ says, we can feel the heat !!

Not sure I have ever seen Joshua trees in person... they are great!

6 Aug 2010 9:51pm

Kiki from Ambert, France

The light is beautiful but the vegetation is thirsty and seems to suffer from the heat !

Beautiful detail captured in this composition with great contrasts in colors. Love that blue sky! Sometimes the remote areas of nature are the most beautiful.

Bill Brown from California, United States

Joshua trees! Now those bring back memories. In an earlier life, I spent five years in the Southern California desert and have lots of Joshua tree photos to prove it. This a great composition and you can almost feel the heat from the strong lighting.

The Joshua tree seems more like a large cacti of some sort, definitely an interesting specimen though.
