The A-bomb Dome

Posted by
Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 16 November 2006 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

One of the few buildings subjected to the atomic bombing still standing in Hiroshima. It is rather eerie to think about what happened here in 1945.

I read about this building some time ago this year. It's really a nice capture, gives me shiver.

Not true though about the only building still standing - there several one of which is a bank on... can't remember the street name. Lived in Hiroshima 14 years ago. Also a hospital which still has twisted metal bars from the bombing.

@AliG: You are correct. I found a walking map that mentions the bank. I must now go see it. The Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital has a small section of its old building preserved that shows the window frames twisted by the blast. I have seen that.

It depicts stormy and bleak, but strength too.

Steve it looks almost like it did when I was there in 52. Only then there was more evidence of the bomb.

19 Nov 2006 6:55pm

@Len Lee: The building has had to be braced, along with other preservation measures, to keep it standing.

wow..very historical place.
