Some Trees

Posted by
Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 27 February 2010 in Landscape & Rural.

Pine trees are trying to claim Sunset Crater but it takes a long time for the cinder to break down into soil. Even after around 900 years, great swatches of black cinder on the mountain's flanks support few trees.

I believe this is my 1200th posting.

Great shot Steve. Love the way you have captured the clouds. I was trying to capture a similar kind of cloud the other day and totally failed at it :P

I think the cloud "makes" the shot with its wonderful echo of the hills. Well done.

The cloud in this is very interesting..well the whole shot is too, actualy! 900 yrs is nothing to Mother Nature..she'll patiently wait millions of years for things to change!!

I really like how you played with natural but almost geometrical forms here. The tones and composition make a peacefull and poetic story for those historic trees.

I like the way your shot shows the limited nature of the trees growing on such limited soil. Congrats on your long list of fine pictures!

I was wondering about all the 'dirt'. It would seem like it would blow away like topsoil can when there's no foliage on it so I'm glad you described what was going on here. Even with the greenery and the blue sky it still has a somewhat barren feel to it.

I have at last some time to post and come on Aminus friend's blogs... :-)

1200!!!! You sound like veteran of all photographers. I don't think anyone would be even so much near to you. And amazing part is you've been so consistent at this.

Just imagine 1200 photographs of superb quality of all aspects. This is really a high degree of sustainability.

Congratulation and thanks for inspiring rest of us, Steve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
