@Viewfinder: From the National Park Service, I learned: The highest ground temperature in Death Valley was 201F (93.9C) on July 15, 1972 at Furnace Creek. The air temperature that day was 128F (53.3C). However, you can be sure the sand was nowhere near this temperature early in the morning in March.
