@kitty: Wind erosion is the main force. Water is also a factor and freezing and thawing would help, too.

@Sunder: Parts of some formations become very thin and break under the force of gravity.
I couldn't imagine a more complimentary sky to that beautifully illuminated foreground. Perfect.
