We are beginning a big loop around this dry lake bed which shows that this was once a much wetter area. We are also beyond the point where four-wheel drive is recommended. I didn't need it at all but was glad for the high ground clearance. There were spots on this section of road that probably get pretty muddy after a big rain.

I'll be busy the next few weeks. Commenting will be spotty at best.

I like very much the leading dry vegetation which shows well this desert landscape as well as the sweetness of the mountains of the background

I easily imagine a lake here as you've mentionned. It's incredible how landscapes can change (I guess it took a long time). Amazing spot.

It must have offered a beautiful reflecting surface when there was water on this lake bed... not to mention habitat for all kinds of life.

Wow, such a hostile land - it is amazing how what once nourished and supported life can just dry up and provide nothing more. Wonderful shot!

Let's hope it remains like this, and doesn't fall into the hands of developers.

@Michael Fresh: Luckily, this is part of a national park. Unless the politicians go completely crazy, it should be safe.

Quite an arid capture of this beautiful landscape. I wonder how lush it once was when the lake was present.

Lovely contrast between the blue sky and the bleak terrain. I like this infinite view of the desert and you framed it perfectly with the 1/3 rule. The presence of the bush in foreground enhances the feeling of vast emptiness. A bright and colourful image.
