Complete Room

Posted by
Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 24 August 2012 in Architecture.

I thought the front wall of this living space had been rebuilt so, I called the National Monument to be sure. This room has not been. It allows us a view of how these rooms looked back in the heyday of this pueblo. Note the rather small door and the smoke hole, above it, at the top of the wall. It's the smoke hole that tells us that this wall has not been rebuilt. You can tell that the sides of the hole are black. They wouldn't be had it been rebuilt.

There are a few more complete rooms next to this one. The front walls of most of those have been rebuilt in part. The fellow I talked to said that they were rebuilt in a "V" shape above the door up to the smoke hole. I imagine those souvenir hunters of old smashing the walls in their quest for booty.

Did he say why the doors are so freaking small? Man, you'd think you'd save a little time making a door you can walk through Hunh. Maybe it was to keep it warmer? You can really see how much work it was to build in this shot.... fascinating!

it's really interesting to see how these people used stone and clay to build these walls and how resilient they are ... Textures and tones are fabulous !!! Nice shot and interesting information
