Here's Why

Posted by
Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 29 April 2013 in Animal & Insect.

Remember that upset squirrel from yesterday? Here's why she assumed that aggressive posture. See the nose in the hole in the tree? She was warning me to stay away. I backed off right away.

I can't figure out why she would have a nest so close to the ground in a park with dogs and kids running around. But, I guess none are too anxious to call her bluff.

Jypyä Pop from Turku, Finland

Life is sometimes a gamble. Maybe that was a hole in its view, a great place to nest. Let's hope that all goes well.

Ah...now I see! Very beautiful tree trunk brought into view with such details! The same is true about the body of the squirrel, all colours and details are coming through on that extended body!
If it really gets angry...might it jump on people's heads?!

Good capture! I thought that squirrels made nest out of leaves higher in the canopy.

1 May 2013 1:15am

Abena from Illinois, United States

Oh gee, thanks a lot for sharing ! It is interesting, the one in the trunk does look like it's saying back off ! or else...but then I don't get either why they would be there so low. The one outside it doesn't look as friendly and it adds to the image. Great catch !

1 May 2013 2:01am

@Abena: The one outside is the mama squirrel and she's protecting her youngster in the nest. She's in a very aggressive stance and mood.

Diana from Olympia, United States

Great texture and color

1 May 2013 9:19pm

Nance E from Cary, United States

Great shot! Love the lighting and shadows. SHE looks like she is coming after you! Maybe she missed class the day they taught where to build your nest!
