The Maiden of Deception Pass from a Samish tribal story. According to tribal tradition, the maiden saved her tribe from starvation by agreeing to marry a man of the sea who had fallen in love with her as she gathered sea food.

The carving was completed, after a year of work by Tracy Powell, in 1983. The large cedar log used was donated by the U.S. Forest Service.

This carving is located in Deception Pass State Park which is the finest Washington State park I've visited to date.
