Holsinger Meteorite

Posted by
Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 1 February 2014 in Miscellaneous.

The largest fragment of the 150 foot (45 meter) in diameter asteroid that created Meteor Crater. This chunk of iron-nickle weighs 1,410 pounds (639 kilograms). The entire object from which it came probably weighed 300,000 tons and was traveling at 28,600 miles per hour (46,027 kilometers per hour) when it struck.

I wonder if with today's technology we could be warned soon enough of the arrival of such meteorite. Thanks for sharing this.

@Francisco Romero: That's a good question. The second question is could we do anything about it once we see it coming?

It's really hard to imagine a meteor that size smashing into the earth and doing the damage that it did - can you imagine what a 500 ft wide meteor would do?? Wow
