Being one of the most fascinating places I'd read about in preparing for this excursion, I knew I had to see it on my desert travels. At the right time of day, sunlight reflects off the rocks below the alcove and lights up the ceiling. I had to wait two hours in the cold wind to get the light I wanted. It was worth it.
This is one of those places way off the beaten path. How did I find it you wonder? I subscribe to the 'Photograph America Newsletter' published by Robert Hitchman. A number of years ago, I read about this resource on The Luminous Landscape site and ordered all the back issues that Mr. Hitchman offers as well as signed up for the ongoing Newsletter. I've not been disappointed.
In case you were wondering, my only interest in the aforementioned newsletter is as a satisfied customer. It's a great resource for finding neat places to photograph in the USA.
