This is the centerpiece of the Peace Park. Made of bronze, the 30 ton statute was completed in 1955 by Seibo Kitamura. It's 31.8 feet (9.7 meters) high and sits on a 12.8 foot (3.9 meter) base.
There is lots of symbolism in this sculpture. First, the right hand points to the threat of nuclear weapons while the outstretched left hand symbolizes tranquility and world peace. Divine omnipotence and love are embodied in the sturdy physique and gentle countenance and a prayer for the repose of the souls of all war victims is expressed in the closed eyes. Finally, the folded right leg symbolizes quiet meditation while the left leg is poised for action in assisting humanity.
The face does not look Japanese because it is a "Person who goes beyond human races."
