Across the harbor is some more of that sprawling Mitsubishi shipyard. The shipyard that Thomas Glover helped found later became the Mitsubishi Corporation. The shipbuilding activity, in addition to lots of other war related manufacturing, is apparently what got Nagasaki included on the list of potential A-bomb targets. On August 9, 1945, the primary target city, Kokura, was obscured by smoke and clouds. After making three passes over the city with the bombardier unable to see the aiming point, Bockscar flew to the secondary target, Nagasaki. The clouds over that city cleared briefly and the rest is history.
