The bottom floors of many of these buildings were warehouse space to store sugar and other trade goods. The upper story was living space.

An interesting storage space. And opaque glass for the walls?

4 Dec 2015 6:51am

@Gemma Wiseman: White painted panels. Some of these buildings had mud walls back in the day. A white plaster was applied to them.

Jypyä Pop from Turku, Finland

Even more space is needed. The stock is in good order.

great light in this interesting picture. is this actually a slanting floor, or is it an optical illusion?
in european cities, this was a common practice - storage room on the ground floor, living quarters above (with the servants' chambers under the roof, where it was the hottest ...)

4 Dec 2015 10:36am

@franz: It's an optical illusion. The floor is flat.

A fine documentation shot of this storage area. Normally we don't think of this aspect of our food supply.

Wow I can see where Franz is thrown off - but his room looks like the beginnings of a cool "Family Cave" with Big screen TV etc etc...Interesting place here:-)
