Stormy Days for Democracy

Posted by
Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 4 July 2017 in Miscellaneous.

It's Independence Day in the USA.

In all my years, I've never felt more anxious about the state of democracy in this country. The authoritarian, xenophobic forces, currently in ascendancy, are attacking the institutions of the nation. The courts, the press, and the intelligence agencies, among others, are under constant attack to undermine their credibility in the eyes of the populace. Even scientific facts are seen as optional by some.

If you are interested, I recommend "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century" by Timothy Snyder. It's a quick read with some important reminders of what can happen when rampant nationalism is unchecked.

Nationalism and hostility to aliens are also a phenomenon in Europe. The world is stepping back at the pace of democracy and human rights. We can only hope that wisdom will return and we can all live together in peace.
