Melting Ridge

Posted by Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 14 July 2018 in Landscape & Rural.

A million years ago this gorge was a lakebed. Material washed into the lake from the surrounding mountains filling the lakebed to a depth of around 1,400 feet (427 meters). The rising mountains caused the lake to drain into the Colorado River system. The climate became much less humid and erosion began slowly working on the bentonite when it rained.
