Entrada Sandstone

Posted by
Steve Rice (Olympia, United States) on 21 September 2018 in Landscape & Rural.

The hoodoos in Devil's Garden are all made of Entrada Sandstone. The different colors are made up of subunits or members. The smooth yellowish-white slickrock is called the Escalante Member. The Cannonville Member is a softer slope forming layer that lies below the Escalante Member. In Devil's Garden hoodoos, this layer has been stripped away by erosion exposing the red and tan slickrock of the Gunsight Butte Member, the bottom layer in Entrada Sandstone. The tan and red layers are quite noticeable in the huge formations seen in this photo.
